The purpose of this CE activity is to satisfy the Florida Board of Pharmacy mandatory continuing education requirement that all pharmacists must complete an education course on the “Validation and Counseling of Prescriptions for Controlled Substances and Opioids.” The goal of this activity is to ensure pharmacists are proficient in all areas related to controlled substances as outlined by the Florida Board of Pharmacy including but not limited to; ensuring access to all individuals presenting with a valid prescription, assessing and detecting prescriptions for appropriate therapeutic value with a legitimate medical purpose, understanding laws and rules of prescribing and dispensing, addressing and resolving issues identified during the drug utilization review, utilizing Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs, education on Naloxone standing orders, initiating patient counseling, and educating on treatment resources for opioid dependence, abuse, and misuse. Additionally, pharmacy technicians will learn the laws and regulations for handling controlled substances and opioids to maintain compliance with state and federal laws, and support pharmacists in enhancing patient safety.
