Riding That Extra Mile… And Then Some
New Jersey Pharmacist David Borrone Goes All In For Cancer Patients
Some people show up for patients in ways you cannot teach. This article shares the story of David Borrone, an oral oncology specialty pharmacist at AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute, and the personal “why” that shapes how he cares for patients. He helped establish AtlantiCare’s first Medically Integrated Pharmacy (MIP), and he brings that same commitment to his community each year when he rides the American Cancer Society Bike-A-Thon from Philadelphia to Atlantic City.
What makes his ride unforgettable is what he wears. David covers his cycling jersey with ribbons, each one carrying the name of someone impacted by cancer. Survivors, people currently in treatment, and those remembered are all represented. What started as a small idea has grown year after year into a powerful tribute that sparks conversation and keeps patients and loved ones at the center. The article also connects his personal experience as a caregiver to his wife, Laura, a long-time Hodgkin lymphoma survivor, with his path into oncology and his connection to NCODA, including how resources and community supported meaningful improvements in patient access and turnaround time.
What’s Inside:
- The story behind the ribbon-covered jersey and how it grew into a tradition
- Why the ride is personal, and what it represents for patients and families
- The experience that shaped his patient-first approach to oncology care
- What it took to build an oral oncology role and launch a MIP from the ground up
- How NCODA resources helped support faster access and stronger patient support
