As NCODA celebrates 10 years of advancing oncology care, we are honored to highlight members whose work embodies compassion and leadership. This spotlight features Dallas Rose Lawry, DNP, FNP-C, AOCNP, of UC San Diego. Her journey, shaped by both personal experience and professional dedication, reflects the strength and empathy that define NCODA’s community.
What is your role and what are some of your key areas of focus each day?
Dallas – I’ve been an oncology nurse and nurse practitioner for nearly 11 years. In my current role at UC San Diego, I manage a virtual diagnostic clinic for suspected pancreatic cancers. I order labs, imaging, and biopsies, then guide patients through their diagnosis and coordinate their care with oncology, surgery, and supportive services like nutrition, palliative care, and social work. I also lead the Pancreas THRIVE Clinic, a survivorship program for patients who have undergone surgery, completed treatment, or are living with metastatic disease.
What was it that drew you to the profession?
Dallas – I originally thought I would become an architect like my grandfather, but I was inspired by my mom, who worked as an oncology nurse for 37 years. During school, I became interested in bioethics and clinical trials, which drew me to oncology. My path became even more personal when my father was diagnosed with metastatic pancreatic cancer and passed away just 24 days later. That experience deepened my passion for palliative care and end-of-life support, and it continues to guide the work I do today.
Is there a memory or moment that comes to mind where you were most proud of your work?
Dallas – The most meaningful moments for me are always with my patients. Much of my work is virtual, so meeting patients in person for the first time—often the same day they meet their oncologist—is incredibly special. They often greet me with hugs and gratitude, and those connections mean more to me than any degree, publication, or presentation. It’s also powerful to see patients I diagnosed thriving in my survivorship clinic. Knowing I get to walk this difficult road with them and their families is what matters most.
How does NCODA and the information they offer support or help you in your continued growth?
Dallas – NCODA is such an important organization and resource in my practice. They provide timely updates on new medications and education that supports both healthcare providers and patients. NCODA is innovative and helps move the needle in patient access and best practices for medication management. Beyond resources, NCODA has given me opportunities to grow as a leader. As an Executive Council member, I get to collaborate with colleagues across the oncology community and contribute to initiatives that advance patient-centered care. NCODA has supported me not just in my role, but in my career development, and I’m proud to be part of an organization that shares my passion for improving the lives of patients.
NCODA is committed to empowering medically integrated oncology professionals and is proud to have caring, exceptional members who are transforming patients’ lives. As we celebrate ten years of advancing patient-centered care, stories like Andrew’s remind us of the extraordinary impact our members have made—and continue to make—in shaping the future of oncology. Together, we look forward to the next decade of innovation, collaboration, and patient advocacy.
