About Martin
Martin Whalen serves as Senior Vice President of Global Policy and Government Affairs at Bristol Myers Squibb, where he oversees the company’s government affairs function and leads the development of its global policy strategy. Based in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, Martin plays a pivotal role in advancing BMS’s objectives in a complex global landscape.
Previously, Martin was based in Stockholm, Sweden, where he served as General Manager for Bristol Myers Squibb’s European Union (EU) Cluster, managing the full BMS portfolio and business operations across 15 countries. Since joining BMS in 2014, he has held various commercial roles spanning market access, marketing, and sales, with a strong focus on Oncology and Hematology. Throughout his tenure, he has successfully led the launch and expansion of numerous medicines and indications.
Before joining BMS, Martin spent 17 years at Pfizer, where he began his civilian career in sales and advanced through a series of commercial roles in managed care, marketing, and general management.
Martin is an active leader in the pharmaceutical industry, serving on the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industry and Associations (EFPIA) International Board Sponsored Committee, the Bristol Myers Squibb PAC Board, the V Foundation’s marketing advisory board, and the NCODA International Executive Council. He is also an American Corporate Partner mentor, helping military veterans transition to civilian careers.
A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, Martin served as a field artillery officer in the U.S. Army. He later earned his MBA from the University of Texas at Dallas.
Martin and his wife, Shelley, have been married for 30 years and have three adult sons. In his free time, Martin enjoys outdoor activities, sports, and traveling with his family.
