The Oncology Pharmacy Technician Association (OPTA) is created by oncology pharmacy technicians, for oncology pharmacy technicians. This is your space to connect, grow, and collaborate with peers who share your passion for patient care. OPTA empowers members to advance both personally and professionally, elevating the vital role of pharmacy technicians in the cancer care team. Together, we advocate for pharmacy technicians and champion collaboration across the entire multidisciplinary team to deliver the highest standard of care for patients. Membership is complimentary.

OPTA’S MISSION
Our Mission is to strengthen and empower oncology pharmacy technicians in their increasingly vital role as part of the medically integrated team by providing leadership and professional development opportunities to ensure better outcomes for cancer patients.

OPTA Technician in Focus
“It is incredibly humbling to be a small, albeit important part of someone’s cancer journey.”
At the Richmond VA Medical Center, David Johnson, CPhT-Adv, CSPT, leads chemo IV preparation and trains new technicians in sterile and hazardous compounding. He’s been in the field for nearly 10 years, and over that time, he’s found his rhythm: focus on the details, support the team, and keep patients at the center of it all. Whether he’s walking a new technician through cleanroom procedures or double-checking a chemo dose, David brings steadiness, attention to detail, and genuine care to everything he does. It’s that approach that sets him apart — and why we’re highlighting him this month.

Securing medication for a patient and knowing I’ve made a real difference in their journey is what keeps me going. The gratitude they show—sometimes even to the point of tears—reminds me why I chose this path.
